Change and Willingness

Apparently we have now passed the official deadline for people to have made (and possibly failed) their new years resolutions. But this doesn't mean there is any need to throw away the baby with the bath water. You can still learn from last year and use that as a basis to create what you want this year.

With that, we wanted to offer you a different reflection on building from one year to the next. 

These are the questions we ask ourselves...

  • What did you bring in to the world last year that you value?

  • What did you let go of?

  • What inspired you?

  • What did you learn?

  • What do you want to take into the future?

  • What do you want to leave behind?

One of the reasons that we do this is to take stock and actually notice the changes and evolution that we've been through. It's so easy to bank it, or move on, without marking the steps that we've taken. But also because our system will help us change in the direction we want to, if we have both the intention, and are willing to change.

It's this word willingness that has got me intrigued about its role in change. Often when we think about habits and change we think we have to use will power to beast ourselves into overcoming our nature, to deprive ourselves of our preferences or to be our own fist forcing us into an unnatural future.

What if our capacity to change was actually our nature and all we have to do is harness it? How many of our habits have naturally evolved over time because it makes sense? How many of us have stopped doing something that we did as a teenager or child because it didn't serve us any more? We forget we weren't born with our habits or preferences, which means they can and do evolve, upgrade and at times disappear. 

Change is natural and inevitable, it's another one of our built in superpowers, and it happens, as in nature, at its own pace. However we do have some agency over where we point that capacity to change. It looks to me that this is where our willingness comes in, to know where we want to go, and to notice when our preferences or our thinking gets in the way, and to be willing to let go of it. 

Perhaps your personal transformation = intention x willingness.
