Day 1: Welcome
Welcome to our Advent Calendar 2022. This year we are playing with the twin themes of Comfort and Joy. We hope this brings you glad tidings. 😇
I love to play with words and to delve into their definitions and origins.
So to begin at the beginning with ‘Comfort’
1. A state of ease or well-being.
2. Relief from affliction, grief, etc.
3. A person, thing, or event that brings solace or ease.
All of those point in the direction we’ll be heading this month.
And how about the origin?
ORIGIN OF COMFORT
C13: from Old French confort, from Late Latin confortāre to strengthen very much, from Latin con- (intensive) + fortis strong.
‘To strengthen very much’
Obsolete or not I love the inference of that. In my exploration of the principles behind Naturally High Performance I can truthfully say I’ve found immense comfort in the reliability of our design for success.
I’ve also, I now realise, been greatly strengthened!
And how about Comfort’s pal Joy
Definitions:
1. The emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation.
2. A source or cause of keen pleasure or delight; something or someone greatly valued or appreciated:
3. The expression or display of glad feeling; festive gaiety.
4. A state of happiness or felicity.
Yep. I’ll take those and keep them please.
And origin?
C13: from Old French joie, from Latin gaudium meaning joy, or from gaudēre to be glad.
Well I am glad.
And strengthened.
Welcome to Comfort and Joy all ye Merry Gentlefolk.
